Terms of Service

The service
ELLA provides AI-assisted document accessibility work. Depending on what you ask for, that can include accessible Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, tagged PDFs, EPUB publications, UEB Braille and eBraille, DAISY-lineage publications, narrated audio, alternative text for images, and accessible mathematics.
Checking, and what it does not mean
We re-open, re-render and re-check the files we produce, and some routes refuse to publish at all when the evidence for an output cannot be verified. That checking is real, but it is not certification, and you should read it as our own internal quality control rather than an external guarantee.
Human review is your responsibility, not ours. Where a result is marked as needing review, that mark is a prompt to you. It does not stop the download, it does not require anyone to sign the file off, and nothing in the service records that a person looked at it. We do not review your documents, and we do not operate a review workflow on your behalf. If your organisation needs a sign-off step before a file is issued, you need to provide it.
We do not certify that any output conforms to WCAG, PDF/UA, EN 301 549, Section 508, or any other accessibility standard, and nothing produced by the service should be presented to a third party as certified or audited by us.
Where review matters most
Please have a suitably qualified person check the output before it is issued when it is:
- an exam, assessment or other high-stakes assessment material;
- a legal, medical, financial or compliance document;
- Braille intended for embossing, or any material for a named individual reader;
- mathematics, chemistry, or other technical notation;
- a description of an image, diagram or chart, where the reader cannot check it themselves;
- text recovered from a scan by optical character recognition, which is transcribed by a model rather than read from the file.
Known limits
- Generated descriptions and alternative text can be wrong in ways that are not obvious to a reader who cannot see the original.
- Machine narration does not interpret emphasis, tone or pronunciation the way a person does.
- Poor scans, handwriting and dense or unusual layouts can need manual correction.
- Some features are in beta, may change, and may be withdrawn.
Your responsibilities
- You must have the right to upload any document you submit.
- Do not upload illegal content.
- Review output before using it in a formal setting, in line with the sections above.
- Keep your account credentials secure.
Intellectual property
You keep ownership of documents you upload, and of the files the service produces from them. We do not claim rights to your content. The ELLA software, branding and website are our property.
Service availability
We aim for high availability but cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. Maintenance windows are announced in advance where possible.
Liability
ELLA is provided "as is". To the extent permitted by law we are not liable for errors in output, for data loss, or for downstream consequences of using the service, including any consequence of issuing a file that was not reviewed. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
Changes to terms
We may update these terms. Continued use after a change means you accept the new terms.
